Create, schedule, and publish posts
How to use the composer to write a post, customize it per network, add media and hashtags, preview it, and choose between posting now, scheduling, drafts, approvals, and recurring posts.
The composer is where you write a post, choose which accounts get it, attach media, and decide when it goes out. This article walks through building a post from a blank composer to publishing (or scheduling) it.
Starting a new post
- Go to Marketing > Social Planner.
- Click + New Post.
- Select the connected account(s) you want this post to go to — you can select multiple accounts across different platforms at once.
- Write your caption in the composer's text field.
By default, the same caption and media go to every account you selected. If you want different wording (or different media) per platform, turn that into a per-channel post — covered next.

Customize for each channel
Each network has its own character limits, formatting quirks, and audience expectations — a caption written for LinkedIn rarely reads well as-is on Instagram. Rather than write separate posts from scratch, enable Customize for Each Channel in the composer:
- With two or more accounts selected, toggle Customize for Each Channel on.
- A separate tab appears for each selected platform.
- Edit the caption, media, or hashtags independently on each tab. Anything you don't change stays the same as your original draft.
This is the easiest way to, for example, keep a LinkedIn post professional and slightly longer while trimming the same idea down for Instagram with different hashtags.
Adding media
Attach images or a single video/reel to your post. A few things to know before you upload:
- Multiple images are supported on Facebook and Instagram; most other platforms support only one image or one video per post.
- Video thumbnails can be customized on platforms that support it (like YouTube) so the post shows the frame you want instead of an auto-generated one.
- Media gets optimized automatically for each platform's size and format requirements when you publish — but it still has to meet minimum requirements to begin with. See the troubleshooting article for exact size and format limits per network.
Tip: Upload media through the platform's Media Library rather than pasting an external link. External file links (including cloud storage links) are the most common reason a scheduled post fails to publish — the link can expire or become inaccessible between when you schedule the post and when it's due to go out.
Hashtags and mentions
Add hashtags directly in your caption text the same way you would on the network itself. Some networks cap how many hashtags a single post can carry (Instagram, for example, rejects posts with excessive hashtags), so keep hashtag count reasonable — a handful of relevant tags outperforms a wall of them anyway. Mentions/tagging other accounts work per-platform and should be added in the caption using that platform's own mention format.
Previewing your post
Before publishing or scheduling, use the preview panel to see roughly how the post will render on each selected platform — this is where you'll catch a caption that's too long for one network, an image with the wrong aspect ratio, or a video that exceeds a length limit. Resolve any flagged issues before moving on; a post with an unresolved error can't be scheduled.
Choosing how the post goes out
Once your post is ready, pick one of these publishing options:
- Post now — publishes immediately to every selected account.
- Schedule — pick a future date and time. The post sits in Scheduled status until then.
- Save as draft — keeps the post without a publish date so you (or a teammate) can come back and finish it later.
- Request approval — sends the post to a designated approver instead of publishing it directly. The post sits in Pending approval until someone reviews and approves it, at which point it either publishes or moves to its scheduled time. This is useful for agencies or teams where someone other than the writer needs to sign off before anything goes live on a client's account.
- Recurring post — repeats the same post on a schedule you define (daily, weekly, or a custom interval) instead of publishing once. Useful for evergreen reminders you want to resurface periodically.

Editing a scheduled post
You can open any post still in Draft, Scheduled, or Pending approval status and change its caption, media, accounts, or publish time. Once a post has actually published, editing it in Social Planner no longer changes what's live on the network — you'd need to edit or delete it on the platform itself.
What done looks like
You can build a post, decide whether it needs per-channel customization, attach media that meets each platform's requirements, preview it cleanly on every selected network, and choose the right publishing path — now, scheduled, draft, approval, or recurring — for how your team actually works.

Frequently asked questions
Can I schedule the same post to publish at different times on different platforms?
Not from a single post. If you need staggered timing per platform, create separate scheduled posts — one per platform or group of platforms — each with its own publish time.
What happens if I don't resolve a preview warning?
The post can't be scheduled or published until the flagged issue (oversized media, a caption over the platform's limit, an unsupported format) is fixed. Save it as a draft if you need to step away and finish it later.
Who can approve a post sent for approval?
Whoever your account has designated with approval permission. That's a team/user-permission setting outside of Social Planner itself — check with whoever manages user roles on your account if you don't see an approver option.
